HHNA is reinstating our Neighborhood Watch Program.
Our goals are to:
(1) coordinate the existing Neighborhood Watch block captains into a team that can more
effectively inform and protect our neighborhood,
(2) foster productive relationships between our local police departments and our neighborhood,
(3) utilize the Neighborhood Watch organization for emergency preparedness.
Although individual Neighborhood Watch programs can be instrumental in stopping crimes in the
neighborhood on a block-by-block basis, we can be even more effective by working together on a
neighborhood-wide basis. This will allow us to see crime trends and to garner the support of the
entire neighborhood should problems arise. As a Block Captain, you obtain crime statistics for
your area and alert your neighbors to crime and safety issues.
If you are currently serving as a Block Captain or are interested in serving, please contact
Belinda Jacobs at mbjbb@aol.com Also, if your block is currently experiencing a problem that
would benefit from neighborhood support, please contact Belinda Jacobs.
All of us can help keep our neighborhood safe and clean by reporting all suspicious activity to the
police, reporting out street lights, and calling for removal of graffiti and abandoned shopping
carts. Some useful numbers are:

Hi Everyone,
At the September 20, 2007 Pasadena Police Advisory Board meeting, we discussed the following:
1) Central Service Area crime statistics:
There were no significant increases or decreases in August 2007. There were 9 residential burglaries (none in HH); 2 commercial
burglaries; 3 armed robberies (76 Station on Hill St., Smart & Final, and Cash America); 17 stolen vehicles (see below); and 14 vehicle
burglaries (see below).
Also, some of you may have heard of an incident in McDonald Park (Bungalow Heaven). A homeless man was seen fondling himself in
the park playground. The police responded and apprehended the man. The playground equipment was later powerwashed.
2) Crimes in Historic Highlands:
There were 3 vehicle burglaries in HH from late July through August. Also, there was a stolen vehicle on Lake near Atchison. All of the
vehicle burglaries were in the vicinity of Atchison and Catalina. Two of the vehicle burglaries on Atchison occurred the same night.
One was on the Altadena portion of Catalina. One of our block captains alerted Lt. Perrine regarding crimes in this border area, and she
has contacted the Sheriff's department regarding this issue.
As always, please continue to alert your neighbors not to leave valuables in their cars!!!
3) Under reporting of Crimes:
Historic Highlands, and other neighborhoods, report having problems of crimes going unreported. This issue was brought to my
attention by several residents during the past few months. Anecdotally, residential burglaries, gunshots, and vehicle burglaries have
gone unreported. Indeed, the crime stats seem to bear that out. Our recent requests for crime stats appear to show that crimes that
neighbors are aware of are not reported. The reasons seem to be varied, however, the outcome is clear. We cannot expect the police
department to help us if they are not aware of crimes in our neighborhood.
As always, please let me know if you have any concerns you would like me to bring to the attention of the police department.

Our monthly Pasadena Police Advisory Board meeting for the month of October was cancelled. However, Lt. Perrine provided the following
crime stats info. for our neighborhood:

October 19 1:30 p.m. 1100 block of Holliston.
Service area 3 had 10 vehicle burglaries from 10/1 – today. Of the ten, three have occurred near your area.

October 14 1200 noon 1100 block Elizabeth
Also, on October 19 we had a stolen vehicle in the 1700 block Catalina.
As you may recall, we've had a series of vehicle burglaries and stolen vehicles in the neighborhood over the past few months. The Pasadena
police are investigating these crimes in conjuction with the Sheriff's department.
As always, please continue to remind your neighbors to lock their doors and windows and to not leave valuables in their cars. Also, please
report all suspicious activity to the police.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any concerns, if you know of any incidents that should be brought to the attention of the
neighborhood, or if you are interested in serving as a block captain.

DISTRACTION BURGLARIES
Hello Everyone:
The November 15, 2007 Police Advisory Board meeting was led by Sgt. Calatayud of the Community Services Division in the absence of
Lt. Perrine and Hilda Jurado. Unfortunately, we did not have specific crime stats for our neighborhood at the time of the meeting.
However, we did discuss various issues of importance to our neighborhood.
Pedestrian safety on Washington near Longfellow Elementary:
It was brought to the attention of the HHNA Board that in August 2007, a child was struck by a car in the crosswalk on Washington near
Longfellow Elementary. A child was struck and killed in this vicinity several years ago. (Efforts to have a traffic light installed here are
already in progress.) However, I brought this up with the police department because there have also been complaints of drag racing and
speeding on this portion of Washington. Sgt. Calatayud will request a traffic speed indicator for this area to discourage speeding.
Vehicle Burglaries:
Vehicle burglaries traditionally increase dramatically in November, December and January as we leave our valuables and holiday gifts in
our cars. A review of the city-wide crime stats shows that in the overwhelming majority of vehicle burglaries, the thieves have targeted
valuables left in the car such as purses, wallets, laptops, cellphones, and Ipods. Please help get the word out-- Don't leave valuables in
your car! Even if your car is parked in your driveway, do leave valuables in this car!
Residential Burglaries:
Although we do not have official crime stats for our neighborhood, it was reported through our NW that a residential burglary occurred
on the 1200 block of Howard on November 8th. Please continue to remind neighbors to report all suspicious activity to the police.
Also, take this opportunity to remind neighbors to record serial numbers and/or photograph valuables so that they can de identified if
recovered by the police.
Door-to-door Solicitors:
Several weeks ago in the Linda Vista neighborhood, after a series of burglaries in the area, the police were called to check whether the
door-to-door magazine solicitors were legitimate. The police responded by checking to see whether the solicitors had a permit and to
check their identification. Although the solicitors were not linked to any of the burglaries, many of them had a criminal history of
committing burglaries. If you are concerned about solicitors in the neighborhood, please feel free to call the non-emergency police phone
number to check whether the solicitors are legitimate.
Turn on the Lights:
Sgt. Calatayud asked that neighbors be encouraged to leave on their porch lights at night. Well-lit homes discourage prowlers, help
residents see suspicious activity, and most importantly, help the police patrol our neighborhoods. Also, report out street lights.
As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

November 19, 2007
Hi Everyone:
Through our Neighborhood Watch program, some recent crime trends have come to my attention. Please help get the word out
about the following:
Vehicle Burglaries - This month, there have been 3 vehicle burglaries in the vicinity of Mar Vista and Elizabeth. Most recently,
during the early morning hours of November 17, a vehicle parked in the driveway was ransacked and burglarized. During the
holiday season, vehicle burglaries increase city-wide. Help minimize your risk by not leaving property in your car even if your car is
parked in your driveway right next to your house.
Stolen Mail - In Brigden Ranch (a nearby neighborhood), 2 residents recently reported that their outgoing mail left in their home
mailboxes was stolen. In both incidents, the thieves made copies of their checks to cash fraudulent checks from their accounts. It is
safer to drop your outgoing mail in the blue postal mailboxes.
Thanks for helping to get the word out and keep our neighborhood safe.

December 13, 2007 Police Advisory Board Mtg.
Hi Everyone,
Keep your Ipod Serial Number:
Please keep your Ipod serial number in case it is stolen. The police are regularly looking for stolen Ipods by checking the serial numbers
of "refurbished" Ipods sold at some local stores.
Robberies:
As anticipated during the holiday season, robberies spiked all over Pasadena. From Nov. 1 - Dec. 12, there were 21 robberies in the
Central Service Area. Four (4) robberies occurred in our area:
Nov. 16 - Armed - 1000 block E. Washington
Nov. 28* - Purse Snatch - N. Mentor/E. Washington
Nov. 29* - Armed (attempt) - 1500 block N. Lake
Dec. 12 - Armed - N. Lake/E. Washington
* indicates suspects in custody
As you do your holiday shopping, please be aware of your surroundings. Also, keep in mind, some perpetrators are female.
Burglaries:
From November 1 - Dec. 12, there were 20 burglaries in the Central Service area. In Historic Highlands, there were 3 burglaries:
Nov. 8 - 1200 block E. Howard
Nov. 20 - 1400 block N. Catalina
Nov. 29 - 1300 block E. Washington
As always, please do not hesitate to call the police if you see suspicious activity. In many of the burglaries during the past month,
neighbors saw unknown people hanging around, but did not report it to the police.
Distraction Burglaries:
Continue to beware of distraction burglaries. In a recent such burglary, a man posing as a tree trimmer told the homeowner he would
be pruning the next door neighbor's tree and would need to access their property for dropped tree limbs. While the homeowner took
the tree trimmer to the backyard, his partner in crime entered the house and stole jewelry.
Distraction burglaries are designed to distract you away from your front door while the partner burglarizes your home. Similar schemes
include people posing as someone who lost a ball in your backyard and the cable/telephone person who needs access to your backyard.
Lt. Perrine will Continue!
In February, the police department undergoes its shift change. Although many patrol officers and seargents serving our area my change,
Lt. Perrine will continue to serve as Lt. for our district next year!
Have a safe and Happy Holiday Season!

RE: suspicious white truck
We’ve received several reports of suspicious behavior and want to let our residents know about it.
Neighbors have reported a small white pickup truck with locked boxes in the truck bed. The truck has no markings or business name
on it. The driver is a white male, 40 to 50 years old, 5’9 to 6’0 tall with a slender build. At times there is a woman (no description
given) in the passenger seat. This truck has parked in driveways (sometimes for as long as 2 hours) while the man seems to make
phone calls.
Another neighbor reported that he came to her door and knocked saying he was from “Gourmet Food to Go”. The neighbor did not
answer the door and watched as he started to peer into her house. He saw her and proceeded to move to the neighbors. Again he
had no markings on his truck, was not wearing a uniform and did not leave any brochures. The neighbor watched him but he didn’t
seem to go door to door before he left.
On a separate occasion, another neighbor confronted him after noticing him parked for several hours and was told that he worked for
the phone company. He had a woman with him at the time. Again, there were no markings on the truck and no uniform.
If you notice this individual in your neighborhood, please try to get the license plate number. You can e-mail me or leave a voice mail
@ 744-4742. You can also report it to the police dept at 744-4241
Thank you.
